Today I saw piles of coal like mountain ranges of Mordor.
Towering black against a blue-sky day.
I watched kids play soccer to the soundtrack of booming waves.
All legs and feet and kicks and cartwheels.
Soccer boots and shin guards replaced by sandy feet and seashells.
The sea inching ever closer,
Exposing old landfill and playing knock and run on back fences.
An archaeological dig at human foresight.
Today I saw nature’s beauty and power out one window,
And heaving industry billowing anxiety out the other.
Today I saw human folly and childhood joy.
