I’m not surprised the first print run of this book sold out. Under the Love Umbrella, the latest picture book by talented author and illustrator duo Davina Bell and Allison Colpoys, is a celebration of love, family and diversity.
“Whatever you fear, come close my dear
You’re tucked in safe for always here
And I will never not be near
Because of our love umbrella.”
The comforting message of a parents ever-present love for their child is represented by an invisible love umbrella that stays with them wherever they go, no matter what challenges they face (from bad dreams to broken toys) or how far apart they are.
I love the vintage style illustrations with their distinct colour palette and bursts of neon, and the diversity of families represented in the illustrations.
This book has been described as ‘quietly radical’ and I can see why with its subtle stereotype-busting on every page – a child with two Mums, a single parent Dad, a boy playing with a doll and dressed as a butterfly.
This is a big-hearted inclusive book.
